Celebrating five years of the Catchment Based Approach
Inspiration, innovation and ideas on where next from catchment partnerships, business and government
In Spring 2011, the Water Minister launched the Catchment Based Approach (CaBA). It has since expanded from a few pilots to 108 catchment partnerships with thousands of organisations involved and fundamentally changed how we look after our rivers and wetlands. We have a huge amount to celebrate and we have learnt a lot.
WaterLIFE has focused on supporting and establishing the CaBA ' through the national secretariat, and new work in five catchments, from workshops and events and through working with government and business to understand their role in supporting and enabling a catchment approach.
In March 2017, as the project draws to a close, we brought together all those involved in catchment partnerships (NGOs, volunteers, companies, government and regulators), shared success stories and asked what is needed next to safeguard the health of the freshwater environment. We were very lucky to be joined by a host of exciting and knowledgeable speakers from across the water industry and wider who provided provocative and insightful ideas and challenges for the future.
We also welcomed the announcement from Dr Thrse Coffey MP, Water Minister, of 6.3 million in funding for the Catchment Based Approach to improve river health across England and Wales. For more information, please see our blog about the event.
If you have been inspired by the work of the 1500 organisations involved in the Catchment Based Approach, then please show your support by signing our Declaration which calls for healthy rivers, fair water use and sustainable supply chains.
